Designing for Precarious Citizens – Building on the Bauhaus Legacy

Architect Johan Niegeman was one of the few Dutch teachers in the famous Bauhaus. Together with Mart Stam, he designed and built various social housing projects in the Soviet Union. Niegeman’s goal was to achieve a better quality of housing, for the masses, but especially for groups living in poor conditions, the so-called vulnerable citizens. Designing for Precarious Citizens shows several design projects in which designers and students of Product Design applied Niegeman’s ideas to today’s society. Who are the vulnerable citizens today and how can design serve them? Designers can play a crucial role in improving the living conditions of these people.
